There are places in the southwest and down around Louisiana, and up in Wyoming and Montana where people hold impromptu “bush” races, where there’s not legalized pari-mutuel wagering but a lot of money changes hands in wagering anyway. And anything– and I mean ANYTHING– goes for racing.
That’s about the only venue where you can race an unregistered horse, because any place that has licensed pari-mutuel wagering has strict rules about the horses that are allowed to compete. This is for the protection of the people who wager on the horses. The authorities who license pari-mutuel wagering (that’s the kind of betting that takes place legally on the racetrack) want to assure that all the horses are identified, that their background is known to the people who place bets, and that as far as possible things are done to assure that no one is cheating.
In addition to Thoroughbred Racing and Standardbred (harness) racing, other horse breeds that have licensed race meets are Arabians, Quarter Horses, Appaloosas, and mules.
If your horse is really fast, and you’re determined to race him/her, you could compete in barrel racing, pole bending or other gymkhana events that are timed.
Or you could ask around and see if there’s a “bush” track in your area and match your horse against whatever you find there.
