How can I become an exercise rider?
I have worked with horses my entire life. I ‘ve never ridden the dead broke horse, but ride the green or hot horses. I can handle bolts, bucks, rears, etc etc I’m only 15, but how can I get started? I’m also 5’7″ and 130 lbs (not fat muscle =D). Do exercise riders have to be small like the jockeys? Also, I live in norther jersey. Does anyone know of any Thoroughbred racing farm around there?
It would be a huge plus if you have experience with horses, but any veteran will tell you that the racetrack is a completely different place than your neighborhood barn. Everybody has to start somewhere, though. It is usually best to begin by handling racehorses from the ground first.
Look for a job at a thoroughbred farm in the off-season working with yearlings. The surroundings at the farm are a lot more relaxed than it is at the track. But you still get experience handling young horses. See if you can get to know owners and trainers.
Work you way to getting promoted to a hot-walker or a groom during the racing season. Almost all exercise riders have worked their way up the ranks from hot-walking at some point.
It is a natural progression but after working some time working as a hot walker, you can move up to exercise rider. But you have to know how to ride. If you are having trouble finding a position after this, you may have to consider formal training.
You may need to drop a few pounds, not that you are too heavy, but a little less weight may be desirable. Check around your area and find out if there are any thoroughbred farms in your area. Monmouth Park is farily close to you, at least it is in the same vicinity. You may want to hang out there and get to know some people. Good luck to you
